Over on the GimpChat forums there was a bit of discussion on the WireWorm plugin[?] for photoshop. At the time, I put together a script that would leverage the resynthesizer plugin available for Gimp, and created the "Resynthesize along Path" script.
Well, I've finally moved to Gimp 2.8(.2 to be exact!) and had to update this script to get it working in the new version. Seems that the older version of Gimp had fewer error checks which allowed the script to work correctly with 2.6.x
To use this script, create a path (multiple sections OK) then run the script by right-clicking on the path and selecting "Resynth Along Path..."
The first parameter is the width of "stroke" and the second is the bordering region to sample for source texture.
I've tested it by creating a path, stroking it with a line on an image, then running the script against the same path. It should also respect selections limiting the path.
The first example shows the before and efter removing the powerlines from in front of the feluca. The second example has a middle image showing the paths I created before running the script.
